Summer is this magical time when the sun is out, the birds are chirping, the city is bustling... and everyone is kind of gross and sweaty. All the time outdoors, increased activity, pool chemicals, and sun exposure can take a bigger toll on our skin than we care to admit! There are a few rules I live by when it comes to Summer time skin care...

Do exfoliate. No matter what, I feel like I don't get as clean during the summer. Exfoliating not only removes dead, dull skin but also scrubs you clean, removing dirt and leaving skin soft. Use an extra-gentle exfoliator on your face, I like Philosophy's Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash. The tiny exfoliants are super gentle.

Don't pile on products and makeup. While it's tempting to layer on more makeup and primers in an attempt to make it stay, the sad truth is, in the summer time heat your makeup is going to melt like a popsicle. I stick with my everyday primer and Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20. I stay far away from my usual foundation and too many products, they will just clog my pores.

Do overdose on SPF. A bottle of sunscreen should not last all Summer if we are applying the recommended 1 ounce. The sad truth is, I don't think many of us apply sunscreen like we should. Make it a point this year to overdose on SPF. Most Elta MD products feature SPF protection, so they might be worth checking out.

Don't try any intense skin care products in the Summer. Leave retinols, intense serums, peels, and masks for use in the Winter when the sun is less intense. Many of these products can cause sensitivity to the sun and exposure could cause rashes or severe burning. No bueno! Check product labels carefully.

Do drink up. Water that is! Stay hydrated and keep your skin looking great by drinking tons of water throughout the season. Alcohol and caffeine can be extremely dehydrating in the Summer, so be wary!
